What makes Hot Air Balloon Safari unforgettable.

The Pre-Dawn Awakening Step 1

The Pre-Dawn Awakening

The adventure begins long before the sun rises. The logistical reality of ballooning requires that the air be cool and stable, which means flights must launch at dawn. You will receive a gentle wake-up call at your lodge or camp, typically around 4:00 AM or 4:30 AM, accompanied by a steaming cup of Tanzanian coffee or tea.

You are then driven through the pitch-black park to the designated launch site. This pre-dawn drive is an adventure in itself, offering a rare opportunity to spot nocturnal predators returning from their night's hunting under the sweep of the vehicle's headlights. Upon arriving at the launch site, the sheer scale of the operation becomes apparent. In the dim light, you will watch the highly trained ground crew unrolling the massive expanse of the balloon envelope. As the powerful inflation fans hum to life and the pilot ignites the burners, the balloon slowly begins to swell, glowing from within like a massive, colorful paper lantern against the dark African sky.

The Flight: Drifting with the Wind Step 2

The Flight: Drifting with the Wind

As the first hint of purple and orange begins to streak the eastern horizon, you climb into the sturdy wicker basket. The pilot gives a final, long blast of the burner, and the balloon lifts off the ground. The sensation is incredibly smooth; there is no feeling of acceleration or sudden movement, simply the gentle realization that the earth is slowly dropping away beneath you.

The flight path is dictated entirely by the wind, ensuring that every single balloon safari is completely unique. The pilot has control over the altitude, allowing them to vary the perspective dramatically. One moment, you may be skimming just a few feet above the tall grass, causing a herd of startled impalas to bound away in graceful arcs. The next moment, the pilot may take the balloon up to a thousand feet, providing a staggering, panoramic view that stretches for dozens of miles across the Serengeti plains.

A Bird’s-Eye View of the Wildlife Step 3

A Bird’s-Eye View of the Wildlife

From the air, the true scale of the ecosystem becomes apparent. The animal trails, invisible from the ground, look like a complex, delicate vascular system etched into the earth. If you are flying during the Great Migration, the sight of tens of thousands of wildebeest and zebra dotting the plains below you like pepper on a green tablecloth is utterly incomprehensible.

However, the balloon is not just for viewing the mega-herds. Because you are silent, animals are less likely to flee. You might float over a pod of hippos returning to the river after a night of grazing, or look straight down onto the broad back of a solitary bull elephant. Spotting predators from the air is a thrilling challenge; the distinct, tawny shape of a lion pride sleeping on a granite kopje, or the spotted pattern of a leopard draped over a branch, is often easier to identify from above than through the dense brush at ground level.

The Classic Champagne Breakfast Step 4

The Classic Champagne Breakfast

A hot air balloon flight typically lasts around one hour, depending on the wind conditions and available landing sites. The landing itself is an exciting part of the experience. The pilot will brief you on the "landing position" (usually crouching in the basket), and depending on the wind speed, the basket may tip onto its side and drag slightly before coming to a complete halt—a fun, slightly bumpy conclusion to the serene flight.

However, the adventure does not end upon landing. In keeping with a tradition dating back to the very first balloon flights in 18th-century France, your safe return to earth is celebrated with a champagne toast. But in Tanzania, this tradition is elevated to an art form.

Integrating the Balloon Safari Step 5

Integrating the Balloon Safari

A Hot Air Balloon Safari is an optional extra that can be seamlessly integrated into almost any Ngomi Adventures Northern Circuit itinerary. It is most commonly executed in the central Serengeti (Seronera), where the launch sites are centrally located, but it is also available in the Ndutu region during the calving season, the northern Serengeti during the river crossings, and over the baobab-studded landscapes of Tarangire National Park.

It is particularly popular for honeymooners, anniversary celebrations, or anyone looking to add a touch of ultimate romance to their trip. Because the flight and breakfast conclude by mid-morning (usually around 9:30 AM), you are reunited with your private guide and vehicle directly at the breakfast site, allowing you to seamlessly continue your day with a full game drive.

A serene, silent glide over the awakening African savannah, offering a perspective unmatched by any game drive.
